France bans titanium dioxide !

Do you remember?

Last April 2019, the French Ecological Transition and Economy Ministries signed a decree suspending foods containing titanium dioxide.

What is Titanium Dioxide?

Titanium dioxide is a white powder used to whiten, obscure or intensify the brightness of food products and cosmetics. This additive referred to as E171 or TiO2, very often consists of nanoparticles potentially harmful to health.
Nanoparticles smaller than 100 nanometers indeed facilitate their penetration into the body.

Titanium Dioxide, an ingredient banned as from the 1st of January 2020.

Already in 2017, a study realized by the INRA (National Institute for Agronomic Research) had shown that exposure to this substance favored the growth of precancerous lesions of the intestine and disorders of the immune system.

Since then, 25 new studies have been identified. “None of these can rule out the carcinogenic risk linked to this additive”.

This is why the French Government has decided to ban the use of titanium dioxide as a food additive, after the country’s health and safety agency said there was not enough evidence to guarantee the safety of this substance.

What about Titanium Dioxide and Toothpastes?

Titanium Dioxide should have nothing to do in any toothpaste! It should be banned, and manufacturers should stop using it, because people health is the very first priority.

The Associations “Agir pour l’Environnement” and Foodwatch want the ban to be extended to drugs and cosmetics such as toothpastes.
This is why “Agir pour l’Environnement” has carried out a study to know how many toothpastes contain titanium dioxide.

The result of this study is alarming: 2/3 of the toothpastes do contain titanium dioxide.

The association explains in its report that they have studied 408 toothpastes, and 59 of them are for children.  50% of children’s toothpastes contained titanium dioxide!

In total, 271 toothpastes do contain titanium dioxide, including 25 organic certified toothpastes… !

The association also specified that “none of the 271 toothpastes specifies on its packaging if the titanium dioxide present is in nanoparticulate state (which the European regulation on cosmetics requires on the labeling mentioning “nanos” if the TiO2 particles are less than 100nm)”.

What you should do?

If you have any doubt regarding the composition of your favorite toothpaste, you can check on the “Agir pour l’Environnement” website to find out whether or not, it contains titanium dioxide.
